Can I Claim Home Improvement Costs On My Taxes

St. Louis Park, MN. Room Addition

“We bought a home in Nov. 2009 and put $6000.00 into it before we moved in. Can we claim any of that on our 2009 taxes?”

Generally no. Certain energy efficiency improvements might qualify for one of the Residential Energy Credits but these are limited. Without knowing exactly what you did it’s not possible to say if any of your improvements qualify there.

You may be able to add them to your cost basis when you eventually sell the house. But simple repairs and replacement (paint, appliances, carpet, flooring, etc.) do not qualify for that.

Talk with your tax professional with the details of your home improvements,
if it was a energy efficiency, kitchen or bath remodel or home repair.
