Who wouldn’t be happy saving money on their energy bills. Sealing up those air leaks, will give you the quickest savings on your energy bills. You can start with a home energy audit, I have a DIY guide on my website. For a more thorough report, there are companies that have certified auditors that can perform a blower door test, use a fog machine and infrared cameras to detect leaks. Beware if you seal up all those air leaks, you must also have proper ventilation to remove any harmful gases that are present in your home.

Today you have several options for saving money on water heating. If your water heater is several years old or older it’s a good time to replace it with a high-efficiency model. The most economical hot water heater is your typical tank heater. A tankless hot water heater will cost more up front, but with the energy tax credit and the continued energy savings of not heating water when it’s not needed may be a better way to go. There are also solar and hybrid water heaters available, which may be a good choice depending on your home.

Adding insulation to your home will help with your energy bills. You’ll see the biggest payback right away if you have little or no insulation now. If your home is already well insulated, it will take several years to recoup your investment. Before you add insulation to your attic make sure you seal up all those leaks going into the attic space first, to prevent heat and moisture escaping into the attic and causing new problems such as mold, ice dams, roof damage.
